there are going to be two congressional hearings this week on the safety of america's nuclear power plants. some members of congress want a moratorium on new plants. and they want to halt operations at facilities in earthquake prone areas like those in california at least until the full extent of the damage in japan is known. there are more than 100 nuclear reactors in the u.s. and the fear is a similar catastrophe could happen here. but u.s. officials say safeguards are in place to deal with it. >> whenever there's any new information we always take that information into consideration and make changes if necessary. but right now we continue to believe that nuclear power plants in this country operate safely and securely. >> reporter: and the white house says president obama still believes nuclear power is an important part of america's energy future. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> time now 6:15. california has two nuclear power plants. and the operators say they can with stand large earthquakes. in northern san diego county and diablo canyon plant.

inbound is one of america's busiest bus lines. westbound bay bridge looks okay coming up to the toll plaza with only a little bit of a delay we're about ten minutes away from them turning on the metering lights. interstate 880 north and southbound in front of the coliseum traffic moves well there. there's no game today at the coliseum. the a's home opener is tomorrow. and the morning commute on northbound 101 in san jose looks pretty good. northbound 280 also a little bit of slow traffic at 17 but for the most part looking good. livermore valley 580 westbound still in good shape from livermore, dublin into castro valley. let's go to steve. >>> thank you, sal. ending march on a sunny and warm record setting note. we had 21 days of rain but the last four days 60s on monday, upper 60s and low 70s on tuesday. yesterday just went right up. we had some low to mid-80s. today we'll top it out. more records are possible today. in fact they're probably likely. and i might be underdone on some of these if the northeast wind continues. can't find a cloud. that's for sure. so severe clear is definitely

on a five-day trip to latin america. the president is scheduled to visit brazil, chile, and el salvador. he's taking the trip to focus on drugs and security. first lady michelle obama and her mother and daughters will make the trip also. >>> donald trump that is considering a run for president that says instead of going to latin america president obama should be going to japan. he says it would be brilliant. >>> on capitol hill a bill that was approved in the house to cut off spending for national public radio is not expected to gain traction in the u.s. senate. the bill was passed yesterday mostly along party lines. this was the second time the public radio was targeted in the house of representatives. last month lawmakers voted to strip money for public radio but it was rejected by the u.s. senate. >>> the new york times website is going to get more expensive if you use it a lot. the newspaper will allow everyone to look at as many as 20 articles, videos, and slide shows every month for free. after that it will be asking visitors to choose a four week subscription plan costing up to $35.

flight on virgin america but having companion with these little guys it will be an awesome flight. >> it's wonderful. some of them have been at the shelter for a while so volunteers have gotten to know them. we had some volunteers come in last night to visit and say good-bye and say good luck to everyone. >> reporter: fourteen in all from the san francisco animal care and control in san francisco have been chosen to make the trip to the an mail care and control in new york city. the dogs are flying virgin atlantic this morning. we watched volunteers unload the dogs about an hour ago. virgin teamed up with the shelter again this year and picking up the tab. the reason for the swap, the aspca in new york city has a need for chihuahuas and other small dogs and in northern california the opposite is true. oftentimes too many people adopt chihuahuas thinking they will be the perfect pet for small children because of their size or that they don't need exercise. and they find they just can't care for these small little dogs. chihuahuas are also overbred. here's where you can help this morning.

. the new study says san francisco's on track to become one of the richest cities in america. the study says the city will have a gross domestic product of $435 billion by the year 2025. the study also says each resident will bring in $92,000. san jose has also made the list. it's expected to become even wealthier than san francisco. >>> a bart extension project in east contra costa county is about to get a $19 million boost. so-called e bart ten mile extension will run from the pittsburgh bay point station to hill crest avenue in antioch with one station in between on railroad avenue in pittsburgh. now the metropolitan transportation commission approved the $19 million which will come from bridge tolls. the e bart line believe it or not will use diesel trains that are narrower and less expensive than the electric bart trains. that extension by the way is scheduled to open in 2015. >>> all right. time now 6:47. we want to go right back over to sal because some of the roads could be getting pretty bad right now and wet. >> well, funny you mentioned that because we just had report of flooding
